New Year, old me, no pressure.

Happy new year everyone!

I was thinking about what new year topics I could discuss over here, maybe a list of things I want to change or that we should not change at all and tell you guys how good my last year was and you can invent yourself new every day.

The truth is, 2018 was a good year for me. Even though I lost family, had a heartbreak and difficult times, in the last year I shaped into a person I can certainly be proud of. There is still way to go, but I finally came on terms with being alone and loving me as I am. 

It almost feels like people like to invent themselves completely new with the beginning of the new year and it is good to have some resolutions or goals. Even though you can obviously start a new habit on every day of the year, it is psychologically very helpful to have a „cut“ and start like the end of the old and beginning of the new year. So don’t feel silly for having resolutions just because others make fun of it. Just always remember to not push yourself too much. In the end it should make you better and healthier and not cause more problems.

 

I feel like I finally got a grasp on how I want to live life in 2018 and therefore I like to continue where I left. 

But I also have a few more goals set for me. They mostly came up when I reflected on the last year and what I couldn’t achieve and why not, hence I sat down and tried to find an easy way to achieve them in smaller steps this year. I always find to write down in more details makes thing easier. For example writing down the cities you want to visit and when instead of simply „travel more“. 

I basically just want to keep moving forward without pushing myself too much because I feel I need to become a completely new person. I’d also love to travel as much as possible, write and take photos as many as possible. Maybe behave a bit more like a grown up and start saving for property. 

I wrote my list of resolutions, but these are all things I’ve been working on for some time now, so there’s nothing that feels like a „new me“ resolution, more like an upgrade, and that’s why I like it. 

More sport and a healthier diet

Probably on everyones list. I know already I won’t go to the Gym 5 times a week, but I really enjoyed it in the last year and hope to get back in again. I signed up for a gym already and found a trainings buddy, so I hope I can get back on track and find a nice balance to my studies and office job.

I also want to try to eat healthier again. I don’t need to go on a diet but I just know I feel better if I eat clean and therefore try to get back in again.

I decided to read at least 12 books this year. I always say I want to get back into more reading, but some easy no brainer Netflix is often just too tempting after a long day of work and studying.

So one of my goals is to read at least one book per month. I already wrote a list of books I am interested in and I drew a bookshelf in my journal, where I will fill in a book every time I finish one.

Ethical shopping

This is actually a quite important goal for myself. The last two years were the first time I really had money to spent on clothes and so I did. It is a nice feeling to finally be able to afford something nice if you see it. Although I did not buy like crazy and do look for good quality, I still bought quite a lot on the high street. 

I already started last year to avoid clothing made of polyester, as I don’t like the feeling of it at all. It did upset me a few times that I had to put a beautiful blouse or dress back. But I knew in the end I would not wear it at all as it is simply a very expensive plastic back. I want to go a step further and try to avoid high street even more and wear small brands. It is money well spent, as I own a few pieces which were handmade by small designer who put all their heart and skills in it. They also mostly use good quality and ethically sourced fabrics. And my wardrobe is way too small so I wouldn’t be able to fit much more anyway till I move to a flat with walk in closet.

 

Travel once a month

I already said last year that I want to travel more. Who doesn’t. But I always had the problem that I could not find someone to go with me or that I wanted this experience with someone and decided to wait till they had time. It ended with me not traveling as much as I wanted to.

A big reveal for me last year was that if I always wait for someone to experience an adventure or moment with, I might not experience it at all. And therefore I decided to go on my own. Yes, it might be different to see a beautiful sunset without a partner, but at least you’re seeing it. And you can always come back with the right person at the right time. 

I decided to try to travel at least once a month. It doesn’t have to be a big trip to God knows where. Even just a day trip on the train to somewhere in Scotland. Because I am already here since two years and haven’t been to Aberdeen or Skye or the Glenfinnan Viaduct yet. 

Learn a new skill

This might be a bit tricky between work, study, gym, traveling, social life and sleep. But I really want to learn a new skill this year. On my list so far are gaelic, piano or scuba diving. 

Write a letter once a month

Some of my family members don’t have a smartphone and it is quite tricky to stay in contact. Of course I call them from time to time or visit when I am in Germany, but letters are the only proper way to stay in contact. In the past I didn’t quite manage to write as often as I wanted, simply because I always wanted to write too much. And I always wanted to print photos which ended in not doing anything at all because I didn’t had enough time for it. I really regret it now because I never managed to write to my granddad who passed away last year. 

This year I will try to write short letters or postcards, if I have time to print photos thats fine, otherwise I will send it anyway. 

 

As you can see a lot of them are not something completely new goals, but customised and improved. Chances are you’re already doing just fine and I wanted to remind you, that you don’t need to have a list of goals neatly lined up in your new 2019 calendar in order to get ahead. 

A new year doesn’t always have to mean you need to do a clean slate. It’s a chance to start over when you really need it, but other times it’s just a chance to reflect on the past and continue the great work you’ve already been doing.
